Motown The Musical At Shaftesbury theatre

Catch the magic of sensational London musical, Motown The Musical at the magnificent Shaftesbury Theatre London! Broadway sensation has already stirred the box office with its houseful shows. Motown the Musical is the real life saga of  Motown Records. The show features chartbusting 40 hits such as “My Girl”, “Heard it Through the Grapevine” “I Want You Back”, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.

Based on the 1994 autobiography, Motown The Musical features a book penned by Berry Gordy Jr. who is also the founder of Motown. The show revolves around the foundation of Motown record label by Gordy. The show also features his life long relationships with stars such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations. With ensemble cast of 40 performers, the show starts in 1983, where stars have gathered for 25th anniversary celebration of Motown records. The show then flashes back and transfers to Detroit in Michigan, where Berry Gordy as a young boy. The story follows his life to the foundation of label and further.

The name Motown Records is mainly formed with the combination of two words Motor and Town. This is also the nickname for Detroit where the label was founded. The small record label, Motown went on achieving remarkable success with 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart from 1960 to 1969. The music industry found a new dimension with the Motown sound and still enjoying huge popularity and has influenced modern music a lot.

motown_showUnder the superb direction of Charles Randolph – Wright, the Broadway production was a complete delight and was nominated for four Tony Awards. In April 2013, the show made its debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre till January 2015. Before making debut in London, the show toured the USA. On 11th February, Motown the Musical opened at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre after replacing Memphis starring Beverley Knight.
