Motown the Musical is the real life saga of Motown Records. The hugely popular jukebox musical features 40 chartbusting hits such as “My Girl”, “Heard it Through the Grapevine” “I Want You Back”, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. The story is adapted from a book by Berry Gordy Jr. who is the founder of Motown and is based on his 1994 autobiography.
Motown The Musical revolves around the story of Gordy’s foundation of the Motown record label. During the course of his career, he also developed life long relationships to the stars such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations. The show comprises of 40 performers and set in the era of 80s, when all the known stars gather for the celebration of 25th anniversary of Motown records.
The story of Motown The Musical flashes back when Berry Gordy as a young boy in Detroit, Michigan. The entire story of Motown revolves around its foundation and beyond. The name Motown Records is derived from the combination of the words Motor and Town. The name of the record label is always identified with a pop infused soul sound. Being a small record label, Motown attained extraordinary success with 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart from the year 1960 to 1969. The sound of the Motown has changed the music industry forever and is consistently influencing the modern music.
Under the superb direction of Charles Randolph-Wright, the Broadway production was nominated for four Tony Awards. The show made its debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in April 2013 and closed in January 2015. Motown the Musical also enjoyed successful tour to the USA before made its debut in London.
